SUMMARY:Exhibition: Matters — Works by Aomi Kikuchi
DESCRIPTION:CRSは、ブルックリンを拠点とするアーティスト、菊池あをみによる9作品の展覧会「MATTERS」を開催します。友禅絹の着物染めや繊細な布地で作られる彼女のよく知られた作品は、世界中のギャラリーや美術館で展示されてきました。\n今回は、様々な自然環境のなかに、人工的なオブジェクトを使い、3層の絹のオーガンザでカエルを描いています。\n展覧会は12月11日から2020年の2月29日まで。 \n菊池あをみは人生を無常、無我、苦として捉える仏陀の哲学からインスピレーションを 得て、革新的な芸術を制作するアーティストである。彼女はファッションデザイナーと してキャリアをスタートし、25年以上の着物の友禅染の経験を持つ。絹に対する強い 関心を持つ傍、女性らしさ、脆さを特徴とする繊維、ダウン、綿花などのマテリアルを 使った制作にも挑んでいる。彼女のアート制作は、二次元から三次元\,インスタレーシ ョン、彫刻そして映像制作へとその領域を広げ続けてきた。BFA を京都造形大学より、 MFA を PRATT INSTITUTE より取得。 \naomikikuchi.com\ninstagram.com/aomikikuchi \nMedium: Triple-layered silk organza\, Acid Dye\, Pigment\nKikuchi dyed three layered pieces of silk organza simultaneously with acid dyes and pigments after drawing outlines with a gold color Sumi ink. She then steamed them to fix colors\, pressed them\, and separated them to be framed. \nMethod: Kikuchi’s original method based on Japanese Yuzen Kimono Dye\nKikuchi uses special brushes made for Yuzen Kimono dye to make beautiful gradations. The size of the brush varies from 3mm to 15cm. She innovated Yuzen kimono dye techniques to establish her original method with layered fabrics and without rice glue lines as water resistance. Instead of glue resistance\, she manipulates dye liquid to prevent it from spreading outside of her hand-drawn gold Sumi outline.\nHer method makes it possible to dye larger and layered fabrics. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nMy work often uses creatures as a motif to express the heart of Buddha’s benevolence that human beings and all creatures are equally important. \nFrogs in particular are special to me. I lived with the frog named “Bell” for several years. Bell eats a small larva twice a week\, but otherwise he/she always sits like a Zen monk and does not move. Unlike us\, he/she didn’t lie down or extend his/her legs. Bell ended his/her life and no more exists. \nHumans have various desires\, and if they are not fulfilled\, they suffer. If they are fulfilled\, they will be obsessed with new desires and will not be satisfied. \nA jellyfish drifts in the waves and lives a life just to get food. We sometimes stop and look at the simple way of life in the aquarium and think its life is even enviable. \nGoldfish were bred by humans to appear more beautiful. The desire to see beautiful things gave goldfish bigger eyes\, fins and a fuller stomach than necessary. Human desires also afflict goldfish. \nThe message of my work is that the only way for us to live a mindful life is through understanding that desire creates pain\, and there is nothing in the world that will never change and nothing that will last forever.

DESCRIPTION:Sufi ダンスやSemaとして知られる、伝統的な瞑想的旋回の実践を学びましょう。ここでは旋回の技術を学びますが、Semaは特定の形式や美学をなぞるものではなく、むしろ内的な旅の手段とし使われる技術です。Semaとは精神的なリスニングを意味します。私たちは一体となって、本当の自分自身に対して安全に耳を傾け、神との一体性を経験する神聖な空間を創出します。 \nそれぞれのクラスは理論の説明と技術、練習、旋回の実践、そして体験し感じたことの共有と議論で構成されてます。 \nくるくると回り始めると、めまいがしたりバランスを崩すかもしれませんが、自分自身を信頼し、旋回を続ける中で、その中心にある心の静けさに気づくと共に、計り知れない大きなエネルギーに包まれ、繋がっている感覚を実感できるでしょう。 \n動きやすい服装 (白・グレー・黒が望ましい色です。光沢のある素材は避けてください。）でご参加ください。スカートや、ソールの柔らかいシューズ（靴下も可）をお持ちの方はご持参ください。参加前の2時間はお食事は避けてください。 \n参加費は、前日まで$20、当日支払いは$25です。 \n旋回講師・ラーレ小夜子： \nラーレ小夜子は、魂の声を音楽とダンスを通して表現するスーフィーダンスアーティスト。\nCRSのスーフィーダンスのインストラクター、振付師、パフォーミングアーティスト、および音楽キュレーターとして、自分の神性を探求すると共に、スーフィーダンス（旋回舞踊）という神聖なプラクティスを通して、人々と共有することに喜びを感じている。\n長いプロダンサーとしてのキャリアの後、幼い娘が発病し彼女の治療のため休業。その数年後、娘を支える祈りの形として旋回できることを発見し、パリ在住のスーフィーダンスマスターティーチャー・Rana Gorganiの元でスフィーダンスを学ぶ。2018年には講師資格、The International Sufi Dance Certification of Cid UNESCOを取得。現在、CRSにてスーフィーダンスクラス（毎第1木曜日・7-8:30pm）講師、CRS ヒーリングサークル 瞑想＋ 旋回(旋回舞踊）の祈り（毎第3木曜日・7:15 – 9pm) をCRSの共同創設者である香咲弥須子とクリストファー・ペルハムと共に率いている。\nhttps://www.facebook.com/lale.sayoko

SUMMARY:Persian Music Concert with Percussionist/Vocalist Kamyar Arsani
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents a soulful program of Sufi and Persian songs with D.C. based Percussionist/Vocalist Kamyar Arsani. The program will take place on Saturday\, January 11\, 2020 from 5 – 6 pm. Tickets are $20 and light refreshments will be served. \nSufism\, as the mystical dimension of Islam\, preaches peace\, tolerance and pluralism\, while encouraging music as a way of deepening one’s relationship with the Creator. Based on the mystical branch of Islam\, Sufi music seeks to unite listeners with the Divine. The pain of separation from the Creator is at the core of Sufi lyrics and music; and hence the intense longing to dissolve the physical realm and transcend into the spiritual universe with Sama’a\, the practice of listening to music\, chanting and whirling\, and finally culminating in spiritual ecstasy (wajd).\n— from “Sufi Music:  The Song of the Soul” by Dr Suvarnalata Rao\, The India Times \nEvery month Kamyar Arsani travels to NYC to offer Persian Daf lessons at CRS. The Daf is a frame drum with lots of rings inside that you can shake when you play for added effect. It is an integral part of Sufi and Persian music because of the variety of sounds it can produce and its ability to induce trance. Kamyar learned from masters in Iran and has been playing and singing for decades. \nAbout Kamyar Arsani \nKamyar Arsani is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer and songwriter born and raised in Tehran\, Iran. With his focus on Daf (Persian frame drum)\, through years he expanded circle of his instruments to Drums\, Percussions\, Guitar\, Ukulele and Melodica. He currently resides in Washington D.C\, teaching and performing around DMV area and working with individuals with Autism. \nKamyar began Daf lessons with Master Bijan Kamkar. Kamyar has spent over a decade performing and researching the Daf and its roots. His second choice of instrument was the kamancheh (Persian string bow instrument) and he studied it with Masters Ardeshir Kamkar and Sohrab Pournazeri. Ten years ago\, Kamyar and his family migrated to the United States around the same time that Iran’s Green Revolution was occurring. Kamyar’s songs and performances are very much inspired by the people of Iran and their history of struggle and protest. \n\nAt the time he started working as Autism classroom Teacher Assistant in Virginia and Washington DC public schools\, and the science of Behaviorism and creating motivation for students with Autism became his passion. But he did not put music behind\, Kamyar produced his first solo album in 2015\, entitled “No Freedom.” It was written on Guitar and Ukulele. The album was dedicated to those oppressed by Iranian Government. \nhttps://kamyararsani.bandcamp.com/releases \nAside from his solo work\, Kamyar also plays in other collaborations and has performed series of concerts at Kennedy Center\, Library of Congress\, Georgetown University\, UMD\, WVU and VOA. \nKamyar is also the poet and singer of “Time is Fire (TiF).” Their music has been described by Washington Post as “Music from a country that does not exist.” \nhttps://youtu.be/2rn3u92MAR8 (Kennedy Center Performance) \nKamyar takes on a different character performing with Time is Fire\, wearing his sikke (a Sufi hat representing the “tombstone of Ego”) and singing poems of resistance and freedom in English and Farsi. Within the four member band’s worldly\, funky\, post-punky\, afro-infected music\, the sikke and poems make perfect sense. Their sound has been evolving since the group first came together in 2015.
