CRS presents\u00a0Shan.Shui (\u5c71\u6c34, Mountain Water), \u00a0an improvisational concert of music and dance in six movements\u00a0by cellist JunYi Chow, sh\u014d player Chatori Shimizu, crystal singing bowl player Miyoko Satoh, and binbinFactory dance artist Satoshi Haga.
\nThe performance\u00a0is inspired by\u00a0the paradoxical feelings that arise when viewing paintings in the\u00a0Shan.Shui\u00a0landscape tradition of China, particularly scenes of mountains bathed in clouds. The typically blueish mist suggests the gently flowing waves of a tranquil sea, and yet the vastness of the mountain ranges also imparts a sense of magnificent solidity. Holding this image and these feelings in their mind, the performers will seek to transmit them in some way to the audience through six sections of about 10 minutes each: Solo 1 \u2013 Solo 2 \u2013 Duo \u2013 Trio \u2013 Quartet \u2013 CODA.<\/p>\n
The concert will take place at CRS on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 7 pm. Tickets are $25 at the door and $20 before 4\/22 and are available online, by phone (212-677-8621), and at CRS. Tickets for students with ID are $20 at the door.<\/p>\n
This concert is part of an informal series of chamber concerts at CRS incorporating meditation as a means of deepening the connection between artists and audience and is the second such concert at CRS involving musicians JunYi Chow and Miyoko Satoh.<\/p>\n
Malaysia-born, New York-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and improviser JunYi Chow\u2019s music has been lauded by the\u00a0Financial Times for its \u201cskilful contrasts in both volume and texture.\u201d His interest in music explores the indefinite possibilities\u00a0of tone colour and sound, and features a mixed musical style based on classical contemporary music, Chinese tunes,\u00a0Gamelan music, minimalism, and popular music, amongst other influences. In March 2017, he received the Grand Prize of\u00a0Best Orchestra Work by Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra International Composition Competition. He recently presented\u00a0\u201cStillness in Queens,\u201d a collaborative cross-disciplinary work with video artist Karen Y. Chan that was partly funded by the Queens\u00a0Council On The Arts. He is currently the Composer-In-Residence of Teng Company (Singapore) and Vivo Experimental\u00a0Orchestra (Malaysia). Satoshi Haga\u00a0has been collaborating with Rie Fukuzawa as binbinFactory since 2010. He also collaborates with Jen Shyu, composer, vocalist and band\u00a0leader. Satoshi recently worked for the off-Broadway show, TBTB production of Charles Ludlam\u2019s \u201cThe Artificial Jungle\u201d as Puppet Master.\u00a0binbinFactory collaborated with TBTB and toured in Japan in 2017. binbinFactory will perform in France in July and will be in residency in Norway in\u00a0October of 2018.

Miyoko Satoh is a Spiritual Healer. She was born and raised in Japan. In her childhood\u00a0she awakened to her spiritual awareness of the world beyond. In 2001, she began\u00a0studying A Course in Miracles and meditation further developing her spiritual\u00a0awareness at CRS. In 2004, she began offering spiritual counseling and energy healing\u00a0work. She also expresses her creativity in different ways such as dancing,\u00a0singing and playing Crystal Singing Bowls. She offers private healing sessions, counseling for relationship, career etc\u2026.., and sound healing with crystal singing\u00a0bowls.

Chatori Shimizu\u00a0is a Berlin based composer, sh\u014d improviser, and sound artist, who constructs his works for a wide range of mediums\u00a0concerning sound and space. Shimizu\u2019s works have been performed and exhibited in concerts and festivals throughout the United States, Japan,\u00a0Europe, China, and South East Asia. Shimizu has been awarded fellowships from Columbia University School of the Arts, Institute of Medieval\u00a0Japanese Studies, the Mitsubishi Foundation, Omi International Arts Center, Soundstreams, Toshiba Foundation, Yaddo, among others. He\u00a0holds degrees from Columbia University (MFA in Sound Arts) and Kunitachi College of Music (BA in Computer Music and Composition).
