\nFilms are not distractions; they are documents, testaments, instruments of progress. How can festivals and filmmakers work together to not just talk about issues, but to do something about them? We will consider the conscious and unconscious limitations placed on the making and consumption of art, and then we will discuss tactics and strategies that allow us to circumvent these limitations or transform them into opportunities. How have the arts in revolutionary times been used as a tool for education, organization and action? What can art do that nothing else can? We will trace the history of art as a utilitarian social practice up to the modern moment – up to the last panel of the Socially Relevant Film Festival \u2014\u00a0and ask: “what next?”\u00a0

\nSean Starowitz,\u00a0Panelist\u00a0– A Kansas City-based multi-hyphenate artist whose work is executed in a variety of social, political and community engaged contexts.\u00a0
\nDarius Clark Monroe,\u00a0Panelist\u00a0– A filmmaker whose first documentary, “Evolution of a Criminal”, received a theatrical release and screened on PBS.

\nSR SOCIALLY RELEVANT FILM FESTIVAL 2nd Edition showcases a broader slate of issue-oriented films.\u00a0The Festival\u2019s timely and socially engaging selection offers World and U.S. premieres, tributes and industry panels from March 16-22. This year\u2019s lineup of 54 films from 33 countries opens with Come to my Voice, at CUNY Graduate Center, Proshansky Auditorium March 16, at 7pm.
\nA wide range of social issues are portrayed during the rest of the week, namely:
\nGun control & police brutality, Race relations & discrimination, Violence against women & empowering women, LGBT rights, Conflict in the Mideast, The environment & climate change, The US economy & oil rush, Immigration & exile.
\nFounded by Actor\/producer Nora Armani in 2013, the festival runs from March 16 – 22, 2015 at Tribeca Cinemas, Maysles Cinema, the Quad Cinema & SVA (School of Visual Art – Chelsea campus).
