Since 2000\, she has made her creative home in New York City. Lulla LayLa’s music has Japanese traditional elements combined with a psychedelic/contemporary world folk sensibility. Her music delivers haunting piano ballads about love and many other subjects. Since 2017\, she has also been composing songs with and accompany herself on the Kurdish tanbur. With this instrument\, her sound takes on an even more exotic folk sensibility. The theme of her songs/poems never changes\, but when writing for tanbur she does utilize a more simplified lyric with a repetitive structure that will leave a magical impression on your heart. You may also find these songs to be influenced by Sufi music. On several occasions audience members from different parts of the world have said to Lulla LayLa\, ” Your music makes me nostalgic because your music seems like my country’s music\,” even though she was not familiar with or hadn’t heard their country’s songs. She loves the idea of folk or devotional music bringing people together. Lulla LayLa says\, “We all know that the original songwriter of all lyrics and music is one\, as we all know that our original home country is one.” \nMaria Primavera de Jerez: Flamenco based music\, vocals and guitar\nMaria was born in Puerto de Santa María and grew up in Jerez de la Frontera\, the mecca of Flamenco\, Andalucía. She lived in Paris for seven years where she studied theater. Then she moved to New York where she began her career as a flamenco singer and as an actress. Maria has been singing and playing guitar since she was 12 and has been accompanied by great musicians. She has performed in public places such as Grand Central Station in NYC and an array of theaters in the U.S. such as La Mama Etc. in NYC\, as well as in Europe. She won an award as the most promising Latin actress in NYC. Maria has recently resumed her career as a singer and performer after spending some years in Andalucia getting back to her family and roots. \nRaif Hyseni: Albanian accordion player\nRaif Hyseni is the most famous Albanian accordion player in the world. Born in the town of Mitrovica\, Republic of Kosovo\, he went to elementary music school in Mitrovica\, then to music high school\, and to the Academy of Performing Arts\, at the University of Kosovo. He graduated from Caldwell College and got his Masters from Montclair State University in New Jersey. He is the founder of the first and only Albanian Balkan Ensemble in the USA where he works as an Adjunct Professor. As a young accordion player he performed for the Albanian National Radio and TV. Raif performed with maestro violin-player Isak Mucolli. Raif has written numerous songs and instrumental pieces for the accordion: “Fantasy for Accordion\,” “Tango Tirana\,” “Albanian in Japan\,” “Traveling through Albania\,” “One Song without words\,” “Accordion and Three Glasses\,” “Manhattan Chochek\,” “Pearls\,” etc. He has written music for theatre as well as for the documentary film “From Refuge to Immigrant.” He has performed at the Smithsonian Institute\, US Library of Congress\, John F. Kennedy Center\, Washington DC\, Lincoln Center\, New York\, Barbican Center\, London\, and at many other places in the USA\, Europe\, Asia\, and Australia. She works with media artists and live electronic performers presenting improvisation and recomposed composition as well as her originals. Her activity as a composer\, performer\, creator and improviser has been featured throughout the world in Germany\, Spain\, Italy\, Korea\, Japan\, USA\, Israel\, and so on. Hyo Jee currently resides in New York City and serves as a faculty at Seoul National University. In May 2018\, she gave her solo performance with great success at Lincoln Center\, including the Conceptual Transformation Performance “Pyung Yang.” \nThis August she was one of 12 artists from around the world selected to particpate in Seminar in Taipei\, a platform for in-depth exchange in both theoretical and practical fields\, at the 2018 Taipei Arts Festival X in Taiwan. DESCRIPTION:CRSギャラリーでは、鞍井綾音の油絵による個展「 Small Voyage」を9月6日から10月20日まで開催いたします。\nオープニングレセプションは9月13日（木）6時30分より8時30分まで。予約不要、入場無料ですので大勢のご参加をお待ちしています。 \nこの展覧会の作品は、CRSが今まで展示してきたものと比べて大きいものの、彼女が描いたものの中では小さな作品です。幾重にも層を重ね、重々しくテクスチャーを施したこれらの表現主義的な油絵は、主題と抽象度が作品により異なります。\n彼女の作品を際立たせるのは、強烈な色とテクスチャー、色彩の喚起の緊迫感と十分に経験を積んだ人生の質感です。\n彼女にとって、CRSでは2回目の個展になります。 第一回目は2010年の「Yukoの春が来ました」。彼女の第一子の幼少期、第二子の誕生期に創作されたものですが、それは、友人でアーティストのYuko Sueta (末田裕子）の闘病を支えていた時期とも重なり、看取るまでの数年間、展示会をすることができませんでした。この個展を機に活動を増やし、その後数々の展示会で新しい作品を着実に発表してきました。 \n写真ーWomen March 2018 copyright © 2018 by Ayane Kurai. \n鞍井綾音 \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nAyane Kurai was born in 1969 in Hyogo\, Japan. In 1988 she entered the department of paintings\, College of Art and Design\, Musashino Art University in Tokyo. She has been living and working in New York City since 1990. DESCRIPTION:CRSギャラリーでは、鞍井綾音の油絵による個展「 Small Voyage」を9月6日から10月20日まで開催いたします。\nオープニングレセプションは9月13日（木）6時30分より8時30分まで。予約不要、入場無料ですので大勢のご参加をお待ちしています。 \nこの展覧会の作品は、CRSが今まで展示してきたものと比べて大きいものの、彼女が描いたものの中では小さな作品です。幾重にも層を重ね、重々しくテクスチャーを施したこれらの表現主義的な油絵は、主題と抽象度が作品により異なります。\n彼女の作品を際立たせるのは、強烈な色とテクスチャー、色彩の喚起の緊迫感と十分に経験を積んだ人生の質感です。\n彼女にとって、CRSでは2回目の個展になります。 第一回目は2010年の「Yukoの春が来ました」。彼女の第一子の幼少期、第二子の誕生期に創作されたものですが、それは、友人でアーティストのYuko Sueta (末田裕子）の闘病を支えていた時期とも重なり、看取るまでの数年間、展示会をすることができませんでした。この個展を機に活動を増やし、その後数々の展示会で新しい作品を着実に発表してきました。 \n写真ーWomen March 2018 copyright © 2018 by Ayane Kurai. \n鞍井綾音 \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nAyane Kurai was born in 1969 in Hyogo\, Japan. DESCRIPTION:8月16日（木） 午後7時30分より、楽器の生演奏と旋舞（円を描くように回ること）を通して、私たち自身の祈りを共有する瞑想イベントを開催します。 \nそしてこの祈りを通して、あまらちゃんとそのご家族をサポートします。\nあまらちゃんは、CRSのお仲間ウィリアムズ・ケンジ＆小夜子ご夫妻の5歳になる長女で、2014年に脳腫瘍と診断されたのち、現在も治療や手術を乗り越え続けています。\nCRSでは「あまらちゃん祈りの輪」として、世界各地に住む約170名と一緒に毎週木曜日午後 9:30pm（NY時間）から10分ほど、それぞれの場所で瞑想と祈りのひとときを持っています。どこにいても心で繋がりながら、共に祈っていることを再確認する場として、この祈りのイベントを定期的に行っています。 \nドラムや笛、チャイムなどの楽器をお持ちの方は是非お持ちください。経験不問。自分自身を解放し、お互いを受け入れることを学びながら、潜在的にもともとはひとつだったことを共に思い出しましょう。 \n参加費は、前日まで$20、当日支払いは$25です。参加費の50%は、あまらちゃんのご家族へ寄付されます。 \nくるくると回り始めると、めまいがしたりバランスを崩すかもしれませんが、自分自身を信頼し、旋回を続ける中で、その中心にある心の静けさに気づくと共に、計り知れない大きなエネルギーに包まれ、繋がっている感覚を実感できるでしょう。 \nIf you are quiet and in a state of prayer when you Turn\, offering everything of yourself to God\, then when your body is spinning\, there is a completely still point in the center… The heavens respond; and all the invisible kingdoms join in the dance. SUMMARY:Intro to Sufi Dance Class with Lâle Sayoko
DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient practice of meditative whirling known as Sufi dance or Sema (Sama in Iranian). You will learn the techniques of whirling\, but Sema is not about reproducing a certain form or aesthetic. Rather\, the technique serves as a vehicle for inner journeying. Sema means spiritual listening. Together we’ll create a sacred space in which we can safely listen to and share our true selves and experience oneness with the Divine. \nEach class consists of some explanation of the theory and technique\, exercises\, practice whirling\, and sharing and discussion of what you experienced and felt. \nWhirling commonly induces dizziness or nausea. Over time\, through whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control. We empty our minds of all thoughts of the individual self as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn. Into this emptiness floods a divine fullness\, which sometimes gives rise to a state known as “mystical intoxication\,” a reflection of knowing and experiencing that you and I and the Divine are One. \nPlease wear comfortable clothing (white\, gray or black color is preferable\, avoiding prints and shiny material which might distract the eye while whirling) and wear socks or soft soled shoes. If you have a whirling skirt and/or a frame drum\, please feel free to bring it. Lale aspires for dance to be a powerful communicator though traditional technique and spiritual embodiment. She has lately been studying Sufi dance with Rana Gorgani\, and in April 2018 Gorgani awarded her the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi dance training. DESCRIPTION:CRSギャラリーでは、詩人、ビジュアル・アーティストとして活動する山本テオによる個展「CODE – 絵のような詩のような絵 -」を6月9日より7月5日まで開催いたします。\nタイトル通り＜詩を書くように絵を描く＞というプロセスにフォーカスしたビジュアル・ポエトリー、オフジェなどの作品をご紹介します。 \nオープニング・レセプションは6月9日（土）6時より8時。詩の朗読などパフォーマンスも行います。予約不要、入場無料です。皆様のご参加をお待ちしています。 \nArtist Statement: \n私は詩人であり画家である。子供の頃から普通のことのように、まるで独り言を言うように、絵を描いていた。 \n私は「点」に興味があり、点はつながるとやがて「線」となる。線はさらに私を引きつける。目に映る世界はすべて線でできているということに、いつも感心している。線は直線であったり曲線であったりするわけだが、それらは必ず交差し、混じり合い、形を作り出す。幾何学的な姿でオブジェクトを形成する。 \nこうしたオブジェクトは意識の中で、大きさを変え、距離を変え、浮遊のスピードさえ変えて浮かんでは、通り過ぎ、消え、また現れてはピタリと止まっている。それらは私に何かしらを語りかける暗号だ。 \n動物、植物、石や雲など自然への関心と憧れは、私が絵を描く動機である。\n同様に摩天楼、煉瓦のビル、石造りの教会、何気ない民家、船、道路など、人工的なものへの驚きと尊敬は尽きない。 \n長い間、詩を書いてきた私は、2007年頃からビジュアル・ポエトリーも創るようになった。その経験を重ねるうち、まるで詩を書くのと同じ方法で絵を描くことができることを発見した。私はマインドの中に視線を向ける。すると、さまざまなオブジェクトが暗号のように簡素化され、意味を隠し、空間に身を潜めると、自在に配置された詩的世界が現れる。 \n作品をどのような視点で見て、何を感じるか、その鍵は絵を見る人のポケットの中にあると思う。絵を見ることによって自由な詩的体験を楽しんでもらえたなら、と私は願っている。 \nConcept: \n線画のみならず、オブジェ、ニューヨークなどの景色を幾何学的に捉えた写真、ビンテージの缶を使った持ち運び可能なポータブル・アートなど、様々なメディアで表現するビジュアル詩を紹介する。\n前回のCRS Galleryでの個展から7年。フランス、イタリア、ドイツ、日本など海外で詩人としてビジュアル・アーティストとして経験したアートのきらめきをひとつにまとめた展示といえる。 \nBio: \n1988年からニューヨーク市、マンハッタン在住。日本生まれ。ビジュアル・アーティスト、詩人。\n『CODE〜絵のような詩のような絵』は、2011年から現在まで進行中のシリーズで、タイトル通り＜詩を書くように絵を描く＞というプロセスにフォーカスしている。このシリーズの個展はニューヨーク、パリ、東京、大阪などで開いてきた。ビジュアル・ポエトリー、オフジェなどの作品で、グループ展にも参加している。\n詩人としては、『走る神』、『青鬼草』、詩とドローイングを合わせ日英バイリンガルで書かれた『普通の明日』『尻尾笑傳』などの詩集を出版している。音楽とともに詩の朗読パフォーマンスも行う。 \nhttp://teoyamamoto.com

See you in the garden! \nAbout the Musicians \nKevin Nathaniel (mbira) is a pioneer of the world music scene and one of the first musicians to introduce New York audiences to the magical sound of the mbira. He is an internationally celebrated musician in the new age\, meditation\, percussion\, and yoga worlds. Nathaniel composed and performed music for the film Beloved\, the audio book of Alice Walker’s Possessing the Secret of Joy\, Ali MacGraw’s Yoga Mind and Body\, and countless other productions. He produces live music events weekly in New York City that encourage peace and global harmony. She began her piano study by the age of three. During her childhood\, she spent most of the time playing her piano by improvising and composing. Her favorite thing was to reflect the energy around her (energy of her home\, family\, people who visited her) on her improvisation and she would improvise endlessly without knowing it was a very special talent she was given. As her piano study became more serious\, she stopped playing freely but started to focus on “what others would think is good” by following her piano teachers’ advise. At 19 years old\, she felt extremely detached from music and struggled.\nThen\, she decided to study jazz piano. At 20 years old\, she met her piano teacher\, Takeshi\, who told her\, “Listen to the music inside of you first\, and strike the keys to play the melody you just heard.” He taught the importance of being authentic in the music and following where the music wants to go instead of thinking what to play. In order to fully understand his words and also master this\, Kana started to record herself at every single opportunity (practicing\, rehearsal\, performances)\, listening to the recordings\, and taking notes on what she was feeling/thinking when she played and how it affected her music. After years of doing this practice\, she has concluded that when ego takes over\, the music loses its life; when she listens to the spirit and plays music with it\, the music spreads love and she is able to connect with others. This has become her philosophy as a musician.\nAt age 25\, she was awarded a Berklee World Scholarship and moved to Boston to further study piano performance and music therapy. There\, her approach was validated when\, as a music therapy student\, she began working with individuals with disabilities. She cultivated her clinical skills based on her philosophy and was recognized by Berklee College of Music for demonstrating extraordinary therapeutic musical skills. As a result\, she received numerous awards\, and afterward was hired by Berklee to help develop their “Clinical Music Improvisation” curriculum.\nAs a licensed clinician\, she has worked with diverse populations including children with special needs and has developed her own method that has been proven to be effective for children with autism spectrum disorder. While she works as an active music therapist\, she also composes and performs with her husband as an acoustic duo unit called Yagull. The past few years\, Kana started to study A Course in Miracles (ACIM) with Yasuko Kasaki and Naoko Ono. Kana has discovered that the process of improvising (listening to the music inside of her mind and then striking the keys to play the music she heard) mirrors ACIM’s direction to listen to our inner voice.\nYasuko Kasaki strongly advised Kana to perform for others more actively. Kana further cultivates her spirituality and musicality and realized that creating music with others (by reflecting the energy around her) is a very special ability she has been given. SUMMARY:Shan.Shui (山水\, Mountain Water): an improvisational concert in six movements
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Shan.Shui (山水\, Mountain Water)\,  an improvisational concert of music and dance in six movements by cellist JunYi Chow\, shō player Chatori Shimizu\, crystal singing bowl player Miyoko Satoh\, and binbinFactory dance artist Satoshi Haga.\nThe performance is inspired by the paradoxical feelings that arise when viewing paintings in the Shan.Shui landscape tradition of China\, particularly scenes of mountains bathed in clouds. The typically blueish mist suggests the gently flowing waves of a tranquil sea\, and yet the vastness of the mountain ranges also imparts a sense of magnificent solidity. Holding this image and these feelings in their mind\, the performers will seek to transmit them in some way to the audience through six sections of about 10 minutes each: Solo 1 – Solo 2 – Duo – Trio – Quartet – CODA. \nThe concert will take place at CRS on Sunday\, April 22\, 2018 at 7 pm. Tickets are $25 at the door and $20 before 4/22 and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. Tickets for students with ID are $20 at the door. \nThis concert is part of an informal series of chamber concerts at CRS incorporating meditation as a means of deepening the connection between artists and audience and is the second such concert at CRS involving musicians JunYi Chow and Miyoko Satoh. \nMalaysia-born\, New York-based composer\, multi-instrumentalist and improviser JunYi Chow’s music has been lauded by the Financial Times for its “skilful contrasts in both volume and texture.” His interest in music explores the indefinite possibilities of tone colour and sound\, and features a mixed musical style based on classical contemporary music\, Chinese tunes\, Gamelan music\, minimalism\, and popular music\, amongst other influences. In March 2017\, he received the Grand Prize of Best Orchestra Work by Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra International Composition Competition. He recently presented “Stillness in Queens\,” a collaborative cross-disciplinary work with video artist Karen Y. Chan that was partly funded by the Queens Council On The Arts. He is currently the Composer-In-Residence of Teng Company (Singapore) and Vivo Experimental Orchestra (Malaysia). SUMMARY:Song and Sound: Meditation and Listening Journey
DESCRIPTION:CRS invites you to the next installment of our meditation and live music series with singer/songwriter/trumpeter Rhys Tivey & friends (vocalist Joy Elysse and guitarist Thomas Monkell). These are their first full-band shows since June\, so they’ll be playing some new songs\, many of which were first written at Hawthorne Valley Farm this past summer. \nThe program will take place in the award-winning White Room at CRS on Friday\, March 16\, 2018 at 6 pm. Tickets are $20 and are available by phone (212-677-8621)\, online and at the door. \nOut of the deep relaxation and stillness of meditation\, Rhys Tivey and friends tap into the healing qualities of music and storytelling to perform a careful selection of originals and cover songs and lead participants on a folk-fusion song journey. This concert is an opportunity for participants to connect within themselves\, and with one another through sharing before and after\, and with the experience of song-listening. \nJoy Elysse is a Brooklyn-based vocalist and composer who creates cinematic\, genre-bending music. After receiving her BA in English Literature from Princeton University\, Elysse has subsequently spent her time in NYC exploring wide-ranging sounds and styles while performing in jazz\, folk\, indie-soul\, and psychedelic salsa groups. She’s taken cues from these many influences to develop an eclectic\, yet fundamentally emotive songwriting style propelled by her passion for words and imagery. DESCRIPTION:CRS ギャラリーでは、「The Color of Energy 」と題しまして、Janet Morganによるペインティングを3月10日から5月8日まで展示いたします。\nまた、3月10日、6時から8時に彼女を迎えてのオープニングレセプションを行いますので、是非ご参加ください。 \nARTIST STATEMENT \nWe think of our bodies as solid\, enclosed\, finite\, self sufficient\, contained. But we share many things\, visible and not\, with the world around us. We share energy of all kinds with other beings\, plants\, machines\, nature and the cosmos. We take for granted our life partner — our physical being — who makes life possible and carries us through this world for decades and sometimes for a century. We move not through the world but as part of it\, sharing breath\, resources\, spirit and life energy. \nMy artwork is grounded in the body\, the kinesthetic: movement\, music\, and dance — and in the body’s subtle forces — emotional\, spiritual and healing energies. The quest for the underlying energy source runs through all of my work — like the Sufis I find no separation between the divine and the body. And why is this work be important? We live in a time of much anger and violence\, and communication is often disembodied. The disconnect between ourselves and the natural world is causing serious problems. We need to come home to our bodies\, our animal-ness\, our human-ness\, our body-temples. \nMy artistic practice covers a vast range of work\, mainly painting and drawing\, but also community environmental art and collaboration. The art includes landscapes painted all over the world\, and a few large series of works grounded in the body: 200 large watercolors of traditional and new deities (I teach a workshop on making your own deities)\, wild women\, dancers and now art about the body’s energy. I have enjoyed collaborations with dancers\, scientists\, movement teachers\, and writers. I have taught at the Rubin Museum of Art\, The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors\, the Art Students League and the Canyons of Utah. \nhttp://www.janetmorgan-art.net

SUMMARY:Free Program: Remembering Executive Order 9066 and America’s WWII Era Concentration Camps
DESCRIPTION:2月19日(月) 午後7時30分より、CRS主催による「  Remembering Executive Order 9066 and American’s WWII Era Concentration Camps -第二次世界大戦時の日系人強制収容キャンプの記憶-」と題した無料イベントを開催いたします。 \n第二次世界大戦時の1942年2月19日にアメリカ第26代大統領フランクリン・ルーズベルトが署名・発令した「大統領令（Executive Order 9066）」により、特定地域を軍管理地域に指定する権限が陸軍長官へ与えられ、結果として「大統領令」は日系人強制収容キャンプへ道を開くことになりました。それから76年の年を経て、語り継がれるその時の記憶。このイベントでは日系人強制収容キャンプを題材に作られたダンス作品を池田薫氏率いるMoustacheCat Dance、写真展をNY Day of Remembrance Committeeメンバーである本田スタン氏、ショートビデオ上映を中馬ヨシコ氏率いるThe school of Hard Knocks [SOHK]により行います。 他にもスピーカーを追加予定。あまり知られてこなかった日系人とアメリカの歴史を、ぜひ今一度胸に刻みましょう。 \n2018 is also the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988\, the legislation that provided a formal apology from the US government and monetary reparations to survivors of the forced evacuation and mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. \nMoustacheCat Dance will present a short excerpt of its work-in-progress “Freedom isn’t Free\,” an evening length work that explores the biased reactions that resulted in the interning of tens of thousands of American residents and citizens during World War II. The work also reflects on current biased reactions to people of various races\, religions\, and ethnicities in the United States. The excerpt that we will see expresses Japanese Americans’ struggle to resist anti-Japanese American agitation and laws that called for their imprisonment. \nStan Honda will present images from a new book\, Moving Walls: The Barracks of America’s Concentration Camps (available for purchase and signing) that was done in collaboration with author Sharon Yamato and will preview the New York Day of Remembrance Committees’ Feb. 24 program. \nYoshiko Chuma and The school of Hard Knocks will show about 15 minutes of video consisting of several sequences created by Megumi Eda using footage from her time with SOHK and additional recent documentation of SOHK work in Las Vegas related to the National Atomic Testing Musuem. Following tonight’s screening\, Eda will share her experiences making this work. \nMoustacheCat Dance has been working on “Freedom isn’t Free” since 2014. The work originated as a short solo dedicated to Japanese Americans who were sent to the camps. Currently\, the company is in the process expanded it into an evening-length group piece to inspire audiences\, through dance\, to think about how we can make this world a better place together. The full work will premiere May 10 – 12\, 2018 at University Settlement in NYC. \n \nYoshiko Chuma and the School of Hard Knocks in NYC has continued seeking and creating visible and invisible performances for more than 40 years. You may check out their history on The School of Hard Knocks web site. Dancer/choreographer/filmmaker Megumi Eda\, a new core member of The School of Hard Knocks since 2014\, has been filming much of the company’s work and editing the footage into unique creations. \n \nSTAN HONDA is a New York-based photographer and worked as a photojournalist for 34 years\, most recently for Agence France-Presse (AFP)\, the French news agency. He covered a wide range of topics including news events\, politics\, economics\, sports and human interest stories. Photographing the space shuttle program for five years was a highlight of his time at AFP since he has been following the space program since childhood. Personal projects include documenting the U.S. concentration camps where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II\, his parents and relatives among those held. Photos of the sites and survivors can be seen in the Internment Camp section of his web site. A continuing project involves night sky landscapes\, combining his long time interest in astronomy and photography. He has worked as an artist-in-residence at five national parks: the Grand Canyon\, Petrified Forest\, Wupatki in Arizona\, Rocky Mountain in Colorado and Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico\, photographing the sky and the landscape with the aim of helping preserve our view of the night sky. Photography of Chaco Culture and Wuptaki helped both parks being designated as International Dark Sky Parks. He manages to photograph celestial events even from New York City. http://www.stanhonda.com \nKAORU IKEDA\, dancer\, choreographer and founder of MoustacheCat Dance\, is originally from Osaka\, Japan where she had Classic Ballet Training at Homura Tomoi Ballet Company School and became one of the selected student members to perform in the Japanese premier of “La Bayadçre” and in other productions with the ballet company. After she had a long break from dance\, during which time she played percussion and won a gold prize in percussion ensemble\, she decided to go back and dedicate her life to dance. Ms. Ikeda graduated from Nihon University with a BA in Dance. While living in Tokyo\, Japan\, she had the honor to work with important Japanese dance choreographers. She earned an MFA in Dance at New York University\, Tisch School of the Arts\, where her major performances included Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane’s “Continuous Replay.” Ms. Ikeda has trained\, performed\, and choreographed work that has been described as “perfectly realized dance” (offoffoffdance\, 2005) and “moving poetry” (Eyes on Arts\, 2012)\, and she has taught dance ranging from classical ballet to Butoh to modern dance. Her work has taken her to the US\, Japan\, South Korea\, and Mexico. As a dancer\, Ms. Ikeda has worked with LIFEDANCE/Gloria McLean and Dancers\, Jeramy Zimeramen/CatScratch Theatre\, Laura Shapiro/quicksilverdance\, Aviva Geismar/Drastic Action\, and Natsu Nakajima/Mutekisya. In 2015\, Ms. Ikeda founded a dance company “MoustacheCat Dance” to present her voice and fight against prejudice through dance. \nMOUSTACHECAT DANCE was founded by Kaoru Ikeda in 2015 to fight against prejudice through dance. In early 2015\, the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Ⅱ\, Ms. Ikeda started working on a project based on the history of Japanese American Internment Camps during the war\, to dedicate to Japanese Americans who were sent to the camps. However\, the more she researched\, she faced the reality that there are so many types of prejudice all over the word. It could come from one’s skin color\, religion\, culture\, and belief. There is a tendency to make a judgment about people based on difference without knowing anything about the other. This generates prejudice. In order not to make the same mistakes over and over\, Ms. Ikeda realized that we must learn from history and respect each other so that we can make a better future. MoustacheCat Dance has a very wide range of projects. It is inspired by local and global situation and historical events that demonstrate immorality and injustice. MoustacheCat Dance wants to invite the audience to think about the kind of world we are living in\, and how\, together\, we can make this world a better place. From Ms. Ikeda’s experiences dancing internationally\, she has concluded that dance can cross the barrier of cultures. MoustacheCat Dance’s projects present as her voice to reach people beyond any differences\, to cross the borders and fight against prejudice through dance. http://moustachecatdance.org \nYOSHIKO CHUMA (conceptual artist/choreographer/artistic director of The School of Hard Knocks) has been a firebrand of New York’s downtown dance scene since arriving in 1978. She has created more than 60 full-length company works\, commissions and site-specific events for venues in 35 countries\, constantly challenging the notion of performing for both audience and participant. Her work has been presented in such diverse venues as Joyce Theater\, the Eiffel Tower\, Newcastle Swing Bridge\, City Center\, Lincoln Center\, the former National Theater of Sarajevo\, the perimeter of the Hong Kong harbor\, and an ancient ruin in Macedonia\, and in Jordan\, among others. She has received fellowships and awards for choreography and career work from John Simon Guggenheim Foundation\, NEA\, New York Foundation for Artists\, Japan Foundation\, Meet the Composer Choreographer/Composer Commission and Philip Morris New Works. Chuma has led workshops and master classes and been commissioned to create new work in East and West Europe\, Asia\, Russia and the U.S. She received a 1984 BESSIE award for choreography and four more Bessies were awarded to her productions in 1992 and 1998. She appeared successfully in the Prix de Lausanne Competition in 1991 and was invited to join the Hamburg Ballet School\, where soon after she joined the company working with Mats Ek and choreographer/director John Neumeier. She spent 15 years in Europe (Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam\, Rambert Dance Company in London etc..)\, worked and toured all over the world constantly with these companies and participated in the creation of 30-40 new works with various artist/ collaborators including Christopher Bruce\, Jiri Kylian\, Lindsey Kemp\, William Forsythe\, Hans van Manen\, David Dawson\, and Redha. A decade ago she moved to NY to joined Armitage Gone! Dance.
