CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents “TRIPTYCH,” an exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Hans Gullickson.
TRIPTYCH presents paintings of hand drawings in various colors, sizes in repetition. The paintings are silkscreened reproductions of hand drawings that balance primordial intuitive mark making: drawing without thinking or intent, in contrast with specific intentionality of design, decorative ornamentation, and presentation. The images come from hand drawings created while in Thailand this last year, and delineate the experiences that occurred while on location there, as well as drawing from themes that have continued to resurface through this project’s development. A book of hand drawings relating to the paintings is also on view to express more fully the process and “notes” that were developed to create these works.
Hans Gullickson studied writing, process and performance, at School of the Art Institute of Chicago under members of Goat Island Performance Group. He has worked with a wide range of materials and objects such as hand made books, zines, video art, sound art, installations, large scale paintings on paper, handmade wallpaper and interactive public projects. His interest in working outside of the assumptions of a specifically western mode of thought with respect to thinking about and creating artwork has led him to explore other cultures, such as Thailand and Japan, and the ways they deal with art, sacred objects, culture, expression and communication. Hans Gullickson lives in Brooklyn.
